Preserving the Löwchen Breed for Future Generations
Welcome to the official AKC National Breed Club and home of the best kept secret for a small, non-shedding "little lion" dog or Löwchen.
The Löwchen is one of the rarest breeds and in danger of going extinct. Our mission as an organization is to preserve, bring awareness, and educate judges, breeders and the public about the virtues of this wonderful dog.
Löwchen have a long history as a companion dog, particularly favored by aristocracy.
While it is nearly impossible to identify the earliest genetics of the Löwchen. It appears the the breed originated as a companion breed in pre-Renaissance Europe where ladies of the court groomed them in the likeness of little lions. In this time of great symbolism, the groomed Löwchen represented the courage of lions. Legend has it that knights who were killed in battle were buried with the statue of a lion at their feet, but if they died of natural causes the statue of a lion dog was substituted.
Meet a Löwchen
The Löwchen is extremely sociable, easygoing, and gets along well with all other household members. Most Löwchen learn small tricks easily, and they have also proven themselves in agility. Löwchen are great performance dogs, but also therapy dogs, tracking, dock diving, competitive frisbee and just wonderful all-around great dogs.
